Anodes for Buried Pipelines

Soil buried pipelines used to transport oil, gas, water, condensates, etc. are one of the most used equipment in industries and their external surface corrosion in addition to safety problems. The cathodic protection of pipelines is used as a complementary method to prevent corrosion. The pipelines cathodic protection is accomplished in two ways: sacrificial anodes and impressed current anodes. For the sacrificial cathodic protection system, magnesium or zinc anodes is used with the backfill, depending on the electrical resistivity of the soil. While high silicon cast iron (HSCI) anodes or mixed metal oxide (MMO) anodes are prefered to be applied in the impressed current cathodic protection method depending on the required current rate and design life.
